"Modernization: Time and the Delimitations of History"

Professor Tanaka has written widely on the history of Japan. His books include Japan's Orient: Rendering Pasts in History (University of California, 1993) and New Times in Modern Japan (Princeton, 2004) a consideration of how time and place were
reconfigured in the construction of "modern" Japan.
